completion of the syllabus of studies from the Royal Ar- chitectural Institute of Canada. Some firms may prefer to hire interns who have a master’s degree in architec- ture. While an undergraduate degree in architecture is needed to get into most master’s programs in Canada, some schools, like the University of British Columbia, accept students from a wide variety of disciplines. New architects also need to complete the architect
registration examination for the province in which they want to work, as well as finishing a three-year intern- ship under the supervision of a registered architect. Registration exams vary by province and test students on the many aspects of architectural practice and design development, including: codes and regulations; site planning and design; building design and construction systems; schematic design; and environmental, social and economic issues related to architecture. Students usually work on their registration exams while complet- ing their internship. Starting salaries for architects tend to be somewhat
low relative to other professions, while varying by region. Senior principals in firms, however, can make substantial amounts. Both employment trends and salaries in architecture are oſten, however, determined by the strength of the economy and of the construc- tion sector specifically. “But if you are aware of market trends,” says Pierre Gallant, “you can manage the peaks and valleys by diversifying your practice across a variety of clients.” S

Architectural technician/technologist – a career worth considering
Technicians and technologists are a key component of an architectural practice. They assist architects in all areas, from drafting working drawings to conducting site visits. Certification involves a two- to three-year college diplo- ma as well as completion of an internship and success in written exams with the certified engineering techni- cians and technologists association in the province in which you wish to practice. Internship for technologists is often shorter than that of architects.
